Beatles Beginnings
Three : Silver Beatles

Various Artists
(Rock and Roll)

CD PRICE ONLY £6.75

Following on from their well-received compilations covering the roots of rhythm & blues, the R&B team shine a spotlight on the songs and styles that inspired the Beatles and which ultimately were responsible for shaping their sound.

Covering the period 1957-60, the first disc in the series Quarrymen One investigates skiffle and the other music that the individual members of the group grew up listening to before rock’n’roll burst on to the scene. Quarrymen Two looks at the band’s rock’n’roll influences. Going into 1961 as they become a semi-professional gigging band, Silver Beatles sees them broadening out to include some of the Latin-influenced ‘uptown R&B’ numbers in vogue at the time, along with more rock’n’roll, rockabilly and the inclusion of some gospel-influenced songs.

All tracks have been carefully remastered to optimise the sound. An illustrated 32-page booklet includes detailed sleeve notes with a track-by-track commentary and an essay explaining the significance of each song to the band.

Rumba Blues - The Mambo Years
Various Artists
(Latin Rhythm & Blues)

CD PRICE ONLY £6.75

Second CD in the How Latin Music Changed Rhythm And Blues series. An illustrated 32 page booklet includes detailed sleeve notes with track-by-track commentary on each song.

Latin rhythms have infiltrated every new branch of popular music. Jelly Roll Morton and W.C. Handy incorporated the Cuban habanera into early jazz and blues; the Argentinean tango found its way into twenties dance-band music; the Brazilian baion, samba and bossa nova styles wound their way throughout the century colouring the sixties beat boom and the drum’n’bass of the nineties. But none had such an all-pervasive influence as the rumba. Xavier Cugat’s percussion-led rumba orchestras helped to liberate dancers from stuffy foxtrots and waltzes in the 1930’s, opening up an altogether more sensual world of excitement and exoticism. Features Ruth Brown, John Lee Hooker, Howlin Wolf, Bo Diddley and many, many more!

Rumba Blues - How Latin Music Changed Rhythm & Blues
Various Artists
(Latin Rhythm & Blues)

CD PRICE ONLY £6.75

Latin rhythms have infiltrated into every new branch of popular music that has emerged during the twentieth century. Jelly Roll Morton and W.C. Handy incorporated the Cuban habanera into early jazz and blues; the Argentinean tango found its way into twenties dance-band music; the Brazilian baion and bossanova styles wound their way through the sixties beat boom and were revived in the drum’n’bass of the nineties. But none had such an all-pervasive influence as the rumba. Its journey from the Middle-East through North Africa and Spain to the New World brought it into American dance halls in the thirties. The syncopated, rhythmic riffs of bandleaders such as Xavier Cugat helped to liberate dancers from stuffy foxtrots and waltzes, opening up an altogether more sensual world of excitement and exoticism. In post-war popular music, rumba is everywhere, from Dave Bartholomew’s Country Boy to the Clash’s Rock The Casbah, picking up Little Richard’s Slippin’ and Slidin’ and the Beatles’ Ballad Of John And Yoko along the way. Even hillbilly records featured rumba bass lines. Its 3-2 clave rhythm, which Bo Diddley stylised and made into his very own, became an integral part of American music and continues to cast its spell over popular music to the current day.All tracks have been carefully remastered to optimise the sound. An illustrated 32 page booklet includes detailed sleeve notes with track-by-track commentary on each song.

History Of Rhythm And Blues Highlights

The History Of Rhythm And Blues 1925-1942 - Highlights
Various Artists

( Rhythm & Blues, Blues)

CD PRICE ONLY £4.49

This exhilarating compilation …is a distillation of a four-CD set; as such, it’s an exceptionally strong collection, each of the 25 tracks a discovery, a joy. The liner notes are worth the price in themselves: Well-written and entertaining, they detail not only the history of each artist, but the context of each song…The most recent song on the album was recorded more than 65 years ago, but this is no dusty exercise in musicology. This is creative, vibrant music. Even today, it quickens the pulse.
M.D.Spenser

Anyone looking for a great sampler to hear some of the classic early rhythm and blues could do worse than to check out this 25-track release…As an introduction to early blues and more this compilation takes some beating – and to anyone doing research or a historian – I would imagine pretty essential, well done to compiler, Nick Duckett and to all concerned.
Grahame Rhodes
